Advisory Information regarding “O-Settai”.

Best entertainment of information , is that none of their people has become the custom of the Shikoku pilgrimage.
It is the custom of locals in Shikoku who know of the Shikoku Ohenro to not spread information about “O-Settai”.

There have been cases of young female pilgrims who, when planning to stop overnight, choose to stay at the local bus stop in the open. Locals who are sincerely worried for the safety of such visitors feel overly obliged to provide temporary shelter and access to their home toilet. These acts of kindness are then broadcasted on the Internet in blogs and on Twitter.

When such information is spread out we can expect more than a hundred more people to come from overseas and have the same expectation.
Since it will be impossible for so many people to receive such support, we will see many people staying overnight in tents in places like public parks and vacant lots.
When such things happen, it will be a great disturbance for the entire neighbourhood. Even when the people of the neighbourhood say to the foreign pilgrims, “Please do not stay in this location”, the response from the foreign pilgrim is, “This place is okay for us to stay because we read that on the Internet.” If such a conversation occurs it will be be evening and the foreign pilgrim will not be able to vacate the area.
And then these people will also contribute their experiences on the Internet and inform others that this particular location is okay to stay at.

Following these incidents, complaints will surely come from people in the neighbourhood.
The custom in Japan is that to refuse help to others brings misfortune is felt deeply.

In order to be clear on these matters, and on the custom of “O-Settai”, if you write on the Internet please be very exact and clear of the situation, and the truth of the matter.

Once something is on the Internet, it stays there forever and does not disappear. People will be continuously coming so please take this advisory seriously and to heart.
